Award for Melrose Arch Piazza’s crowning glory

Melrose Arch, the integrated mixed-use environment in Johannesburg, has won the tubular structures prize (tubular category) at the Steel Awards 2009 for the roof of the new Piazza galleria. These annual awards are held by the Association of Steel Tubular Pipe Manufacturers (ASTPM). “The design of the Galleria roof, which was inspired by the Second World War Vickers Wellington Bomber, was cited at the awards as an outstanding demonstration of how tubular steelwork can perform when creatively and innovatively put to the challenge,” says James Wilson of Amdec, the Cape-based developer responsible for the development roll-out of Melrose Arch. The Piazza is the latest and largest development milestone of the Melrose Arch mixed-used precinct. The R2 billion investment by the owners, Melrose Arch Investment Holdings, a joint venture between Amdec Property Development and Property Partners, comprises more than 60 000m2 of lettable retail and office space and an open-air public space.
