ON TRACK: Grinaker-LTA has moved on site to complete construction of the Milnerton Police Station.
The contract to complete the construction of the new Milnerton Police Station in Cape Town has been awarded to Grinaker-LTA, which has moved on site.
The project entails the completion of a triple storey office block, a community service centre and a new cell block, says Mark Belman, business development director at Grinaker-LTA Building Cape, a subsidiary of the JSE-listed Aveng Group.
While the police station is under construction, SAPS Milnerton is operating out of four houses in Montague Gardens. Grinaker-LTA’s contract also includes renovating these houses and restoring them to their original state, Belman says. External works to be undertaken around the police station include new paving, palisade and wire mesh fencing and gates, as well as the upgrade of the existing site services.
Job creation and training are important elements of this contract, and Belman says it falls under the Department of Public Works’ “Contract Participation Goal” and its “Expanded Public Works Programme” (EPWP).
The Contract Participation Goal stipulates that a certain percentage of the contract works must be carried out by targeted enterprises, such as SMMEs, black-owned businesses, firms owned by women, local enterprises and previously disadvantaged individuals, and through the EPWP, the department and Grinaker-LTA will provide training in various construction disciplines during the course of the contract.
“There is also a requirement for continual HIV/AIDS awareness programmes and training, which will be carried out on the site,” Belman says.
The new police station is due for completion at the end of November.
