Construction of the new R80 million The Pavilion shopping centre in the Overberg town of Bredasdorp is in full swing.
The Bredasdorp Development Consortium, consisting of Asrin Property Developers, Harry Viljoen Properties, Jazonia Beleggings Trust and the Smith & Smith Group, is positive it will deliver a superior retail solution for Bredasdorp and the surrounding Overberg communities.
The 7 500m² development on a 1.5 ha site will have 22 retail units and will be the first regional shopping centre in the Bredasdorp district. It will service neighbouring Napier, Arniston, Cape Agulhas and Struisbaai.
Bredasdorp is an agricultural town in the heart of the Overberg. Sheep farms in the hills surrounding the town are renowned for their wool, wheat is grown on a large scale and other agricultural activities include canola, milk, and indigenous fynbos cultivation. The coastal towns of Arniston, Cape Agulhas and Struisbaai are popular with local holidaymakers and the De Hoop Nature Reserve draws local and international tourists to the area.
The Pavilion will become a destination in its own right, says Danie Viljoen, spokesperson for the Bredasdorp Consortium. “It will bring increased retail spend to the area and more importantly local money will stay here rather than being spent in other towns,” says Viljoen.
The executive mayor of Cape Agulhas, Richard Mitchell, says development in the town is rapid and a number of prominent South African business franchises have opened their doors in recent years. The completion of The Pavilion in June 2010, will herald a new era for Bredasdorp and its residents. The Pavilion will create a central location, offering residents and visitors a quality shopping experience, convenience and parking in one space.
“The mall will bring a new experience for the shoppers in our district where they will be able to do shopping under one roof. It will create also create much needed jobs, which will assist in poverty alleviation in the area,” says Mitchell.
The construction phase of the project will also benefit the Bredasdorp community and local businesses. Construction contractor, Asrin Property Developers, is committed to working with local contractors in as many instances as possible.
Neighbouring the De Oude Arena residential development, The Pavilion’ architecture is rural incorporating silo structures, which are representative of the Overberg as a prime grain producing region in South Africa. Henk Smith of Smith & Smith Architects says the architecture also incorporates the use of smaller stand-alone units arranged to create a village atmosphere and open air public spaces and walkways.
National tenants for The Pavilion have been secured, with a 3 000m² Checkers store as the anchor tenant. Viljoen says lease agreements are also in place with Totalsports, Markham and Clicks. Restaurants will include Wimpy, Debonaires, KFC, Ocean Basket and FishAways. Some smaller retail units are still available to local and smaller businesses.
