The coastal town of Jeffrey’s Bay on the Sunshine Coast seems to have lost none of its shine for sellers or bliss for buyers, says Seeff Jeffrey’s Bay licensee, Gerrie Nieuwenhuis.
“The town has been one of the fastest growing in the country for the last 10 years and development continues. The approval by the Department of Environmental Affairs of wind farm projects for the area including Jeffrey’s Bay at a total investment of around R4.3 billion is set to significantly boost the regional economy and desirability of property in the area.”
He says the Eastern Cape Tourism Board also has an aggressive action plan for raising the profile of the area as the top adventure tourism destination and boosting visitor numbers. Already renowned as the seventh best surfing spot with the best right-hand surf break in the world, the annual Billabong World Surfing Championships continues to heighten the profile of this surfing spot. Akin to Australia’s Bondi Beach, J’Bay offers a laid-back surfing lifestyle that rivals the best in the world. It now also has a Surf Museum that showcases the history of surfing in the town, which is a 45 minute drive from the Port Elizabeth regional airport.
The town’s Dolphin Beach is one of the longest standing Blue Flag beaches in the country. In addition to surfing and wind surfing, nearby attractions include the Addo Elephant Park and Baviaans Kloof Nature Reserve for nature lovers, canopy tours over valleys and ravines in the Tsitsikamma and bungee jumping from the Bloukrans Bridge, considered to be the highest in the world at 216m.
In addition to all the tourist attractions, Jeffrey’s Bay amenities include a regional shopping centre, supermarkets, coffee shops and restaurants, a library, health clubs, medical facilities, good schools and entertainment that includes a movie theatre.
Although large numbers of newbies flock to the town, Nieuwenhuis says that many of the same faces including foreign visitors can be seen here annually, many of whom now own property here. Entry level apartments are priced from under R500 000 and range up to R5 million for luxury beach front units. Holiday home prices start at around R800 000 and range up to R11.8m for more luxurious beach homes.
“The homes in the town though offer good value,” says Seeff agent, Sandra Hattingh. “An example of this is a modern 534 m2 house in Wavecrest with sea views from all the rooms on a 588m2, for sale at R5.35m.
“This architect-designed double storey home was built with outdoor living in mind. There are large open-plan living areas with stacking doors that open onto a covered entertainment terrace with a braai area and a swimming pool. The upper level has six bedrooms opening onto a large patio and there are four bathrooms, making the house ideal for a large or growing family.”
