National monument to be auctioned

The original wagon house and stables at Klippe Rivier have been converted into six bedrooms.

A national monument dating back to 1820, will be auctioned on June 9 at the Crystal Towers Hotel and Spa by Auction Alliance.

Klippe Rivier, a luxury country house on the outskirts of Swellendam, has been the home of past South African presidents Steyn and Reitz and was the first ever five-star country house in South Africa.

Set on 24,5 ha, the large H-shaped manor house has a spacious reception room, a library, dining rooms, offices and a kitchen. Adjacent to the manor house, the original wagon house and stables have been converted into six modern bedrooms, and a separate thatched cottage is ideal for honeymooners.

Features include a secluded swimming pool with splendid views of the Langeberg Mountains.
